The game has both third person and first person view, the former better for melee and the latter better for ranged weapons. I prefer the looks of the small ships actually but my party has already outgrown them and I would rather stick with a single ship for now. I like the speed of the Skeid and it holds enough in one ship to do some village raids. I was saving up for a Snekkja but now that I have 26k I think I will wait a bit longer and get a Skeid instead. Usually the other ships will hold back far enough to stay out of the way. This is helpful when using a circling tactic to rain missiles on the enemies.
If you need them to come help just use F1 F3 to have them charge again. If you want to attack with just your lead ship you can order the other ships to hold at the spawn point. Whether sailing or rowing is faster will depend on wind direction and number of troops. You control your lead ship with arrow keys and the enter key to raise or lower the sail. Your fleet moves as fast as the slowest ship in your fleet. Your Sea King skill determines how many ships you can have. The cities that can build them or have used ones for sale are Tunsberg, Ribe, Dorestad, and Dubh Linn. Only the Norse shipwrights can build Skeid and Busse. The materials are one each of tar, wool, and timber.
To have a Karvi, Skeid, or Busse built you will need to supply some extra building materials. Busse is the war ship that holds the most troops.
